Sooo I just got "approved" or "invited" to join ruelala.com after a looong ONE day wait! Haha. They make it sound so exclusive that you have to be approved in order to join. It was just like hautelook.com when they first started before a lot of people found out about the site. Now anyone can go to the website and immediately join. With Ruelala.com you have to get invited by a friend in which your friend would receive a $10 referral credit as soon as you "the referred" made your first purchase or be put on a waiting list. What's in it for them? The obvious... advertising by the most successful way possible...word of mouth or referral by a trusting friend. Great thinking on there part! That's one of two ways...the only other way of joining is to be put on this waiting list until you receive your exciting "You're in! Just set your password" email. Which I just received today! Whooopie! Haha jk.
For those of you who aren't familiar with these type of sites:
- Both websites offer exclusive price discounts or sales on name brand merchandise.
- They offer womens, mens, children, beauty and home products.
- Each sale or what they call "events" by hautelook.com or "boutique" at ruelala.com offers these discounted prices for a specific amount of time. Most being a day to a few days long.
- Discounts range depending on the item, but are subtracted off the normal retail selling price.
- You receive daily emails on the new events they have going on to make sure you don't miss out on the special offer. To some it may be annoying, but you can set your preferences to how often you would like to be emailed.
Saving money is of course great, but honestly I have noticed a lot of things sold on the website seem to be... soon to be discontinued items, already discontinued items, or overproduced/overstocked items therefore needing a faster sale. To me its basically an online Ross, Marshalls, or TJ Maxx maybe minus the irregular or wrongfully made merchandise. Either way they make you think you are getting a better deal by receiving a so-called exclusive discount causing the buyer to impulse buy due to the time limit.
Which ever way you take it, I am in no way bashing these websites because obviously I myself have fell for this gimick and I do currently shop at Hautelook.com at least once a month. It was just something that I sometimes have to think twice about before finalizing my purchase.
If you would like an instant approval to either of these sites I will be more than willing to provide you my invitation so I can receive my referral credit! No pressure. Hahahaha.
